Excel 2016 ​Part 1

Excel 2016 Part 1 aims to provide learners with a foundation for Excel knowledge and skills, upon which they can build to eventually become an expert in data manipulation. This course will cover understanding the Excel interface, basic formatting, managing worksheets, introduction to formulas, linking data with formulas, importing and exporting data, working with large worksheets, printing, and creating charts. 


To ensure success in this course, learners should:

  • Be familiar with using personal computers
  • Have experience using a mouse and keyboard 
  • Be comfortable working in Windows
  • Know how to open and close applications
  • Know how to navigate basic file structures
  • Know how to manage files and folders

Learning Modules

101: Introduction to Excel
For learners who are new users of Microsoft Excel and wish to understand the Excel environment. In this module, learners will become familiar with Excel environment and begin to understand how they can use Excel to create and work with electronic spreadsheets.
102: Designing a Spreadsheet
For new and existing Excel learners who wish to learn how to design a simple worksheet from scratch. In this module, learners will design a spreadsheet from scratch. This module will also cover using AutoFill and Find and Replace.
103: Introduction to Formulas
For learners understand what Excel is used for and wish to learn how to create basic formulas. In this module, learners will learn how to examine formulas and translate them to English, understand the order of operations and how to use parenthesis in formulas, and when to use relative, mixed and absolute cell references.
104: Basic Formatting
For learners who wish learn how to apply basic formatting to an Excel spreadsheet to make a worksheet more appealing. In this module, learners will learn how to apply basic formatting such as changing the font, the font size and color, the vertical and horizontal alignment of a cell, number formats and borders to improve the appearance of a worksheet. This module will also cover how to format numbers, merge cells, wrap text and insert line breaks.
105: Working With Worksheets
For learners who wish to learn how to manage individual worksheets and work with multiple worksheets. In this module, learners will learn how to insert and delete rows and columns, insert and delete worksheets, rearrange and hide worksheets, change the sheet tab color and worksheet order.
106: Linking Data With Formulas​
For learners who know how to read and write formulas and wish to learn how to create cell references to other sheets, hyperlinks and 3-D cell references. In this module, learners will learn how to use 3-D formulas to combine data on multiple sheets. 3-D formulas are especially useful for creating monthly and quarterly reports. This module will also cover creating and using Cell Names in formulas and creating hyperlinks to cells on other sheets or other documents.
107: Importing and Exporting Data​
For learners who wish to import and export data in Excel. In this module, learners will learn how to save a worksheet as a single file web page, import data from a web page, convert text to columns, import data between documents, and import data from a text file.
108: Sort, Filter, Freeze, and Split
For learners who wish to learn how to work with large worksheets. In this module, learners will learn how to sort and filter data by multiple criteria. This module will also cover how to freeze and split worksheets, and work with multiple worksheet windows.
109: Page Setup and Printing
For learners who wish to learn how to set various print options in Excel. In this module, learners will learn how to set orientation, margin, sizing, and header and footer options, apply a watermark and background to sheets, work with page breaks and print worksheets.
110: Charts and Sparklines
For learners who wish to learn how to present data visually by creating standard charts in Excel. In this module, learners will learn how to create column, bar, line, and pie charts. This module will help learners understand which chart types to use for their data, and how charts are useful in understanding relationships between numbers in a worksheet and formatting charts. This module will also cover creating and formatting sparklines (miniature charts) in cells.

System Requirements

You will need one computer for each learner with the following configurations: 


  • The course application/version installed on each PC
  • 2 GB of available hard disk space 
  • SVGA monitor at 1024 × 768 or higher resolution
  • Windows 10 or later
  • The latest version of Chrome browser (preferred)
  • A shared network drive or SharePoint site
  • Internet access

An instructor PC is also required for higher education training.

A projector system is required to display the instructor's computer screen

Web Access

Learners must be able to download the exercise files to their PCs from our website during training
